What is the Potential?

By any measure, worldwide heavy oil and oil sands resources are huge. In Alberta alone, the three major oil sands areas covering 140,800 square kilometres contain an estimated 1.7 trillion to 2.5 trillion barrels of oil, equivalent to one-third of known oil reserves in the entire world.

Each field area uses distinct recovery methods. It is estimated that ninety percent of this 1.7 – 2.5 trillion barrel reserve is recoverable using in situ technologies. From these reserves it is estimated that SAGD technology will produce 1.3 trillion barrels over the next 40 years.

A typical SAGD project will produce 3 billion barrels of oil over its lifespan.
